Propagating Hygrophila Polysperma

Propagating Hygrophila Polysperma is more of a necessity than a choice as new lateral shoots are constantly forming on its stems. This combined with its fast growth rate. Propagation is achieved by simply cutting off the top of the stem or lateral shoot and replanting it in the substrate, roots are formed very soon and the plant will begin to grow. The reproductive easy of Hygrophila Polysperma has made it one of the cheapest and readily available plants, both in pet stores and online.

Noxious weed status

Hygrophila Polysperma is a state-listed noxious weed in Florida by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Florida has a very suitable climate for Hygrophila Polysperma and as a result it  is listed. In Florida it may still be cultured but neither imported nor collected from the wild. It’s hardiness and speed of growth both contribute to its ability to compete with other native species. It mustn’t be released or discarded into any wild waterways.

Natural Habitat

Hygrophila Polysperma generally tends to grow in moving water although it can be grown in lakes and ponds, often caused by the plant being released into wild waterways. Hygrophila Polysperma originated in India. Polysperma can easily invade and cut off light to other plant species, owing to its fast growth and easy of propagation. It grows adventitious roots meaning that small parts of the stem can quickly begin to grow new Hygrophila plants in very little time. Whist preferring warmer waters, Hygrophila Polysperma is remarkably tolerant of both temperature and water parameters.
